USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Model
USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Model. When commissioned in 1945 at the end of World War II, the USS Midway became the largest ship in the world for this next decade. Nearly a third larger than any previous aircraft carrier, Midway dwarfed every ship afloat, in terms of personnel, armament, size, and firepower. It literally was a floating city at sea, population 4,500. The crew enabled an unprecedented air wing of more than 100 aircrafts to operate off the U.S. Navy's first steel flight deck.
